Perceptions about Philanthropy

By Mariana de Assis

Philanthropy, Social Justice, Decolonial Philanthropy, Human Rights, Democracy. The 10-year Seminar of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice – now titled Rede Comuá – immersed us in these themes and, in two days, brought together in a single environment the references of the national and international philanthropic system. I was there.

It's funny to note that when I started my professional work in the social field years ago, the notion of philanthropy was welfare, charity. The evolution in conversations, and cultural political moments, provoke welcome questions and reflections on the reframing of the concept.

Perceptions on philanthropy

Philanthropy, Social Justice, Decolonial Philanthropy, Human Rights, Democracy…

The 10th Anniversary Seminar of the Brazilian Philanthropy Network for Social Justice – now Comuá Network – immersed us in these themes and, in two days, brought together in a single environment the references of the national and international philanthropic system. I was there.

It's funny to observe that when I started my professional career in the social field years ago, the notion of philanthropy was linked to assistentialism, charity. The evolution in conversations, and the cultural political moments, provoke questions and reflections on the re-signification of the concept that are welcome.

Communicating social justice philanthropy: the power of networking

By Camila Guedes

Social justice philanthropy contributes to generating transformation by supporting civil society organizations and social movements in their struggles and promoting access to rights, a fundamental point for the consolidation of democracy.

Communicating these arrangements and translating their potential results to the public is a challenge that brings permanent reflection to the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice (RFJS), especially with regard to two issues: promoting influence on the philanthropic ecosystem to expand resources for these organizations and movements and demonstrate the power that these groups have to promote transformation in their territories and causes.

Challenges and opportunities for rights communication

By Renata Saavedra

Among the great challenges that the field of philanthropy and civil society organizations (CSOs) faces, communicating causes and the work carried out by the third sector is certainly one of the biggest.

In the NGOs and CSOs survey, almost 70% of those surveyed could not name a single social organization in their neighborhood or city. 50% of Brazilian internet users declare that they know little about the subject and 18% have never heard about it. In the same sense, the Doação Brasil survey indicates that “better communication from NGOs can be decisive”, since 43% of the people interviewed would donate if they knew with certainty how the money is spent and 32% if they knew more about NGOs and their activities.

Knowledge production, pandemic and the direction of Brazilian philanthropy

By Erika Sanchez Saez

We will spend years, perhaps centuries, studying and analyzing what we, as humanity, have been experiencing since the beginning of 2020.

There are those who say that the pandemic marks the transition and the true beginning of the 21st century, just as the First World War established and materialized what it meant to be in the 20th century. There are optimistic analyzes that see this period as a possibility for transition to make the changes we so desperately need. There are also pessimists, who point to this as the first of many pandemics to come and the worsening of all our common challenges from it, starting with the deepening of inequalities on a global scale and in a frightening way in the Brazilian context.
