Conducted by Comuá Network in partnership with PonteAponte, the mapping of thematic funds, grassroots, and independent community foundations that provide donations to civil society organizations in the areas of social justice and community development identified 31 organizations operating across various regions of Brazil.
This innovative research presents the scenario of independent philanthropy in Brazil. The mapped organizations contribute to issues related to racial equality, Indigenous and traditional communities, the environment, gender, sexuality, and others, focusing on historically marginalized communities.
What these organizations have in common is a belief in placing resources and decision-making power in the hands of those who receive the donations, empowering them to take the lead. In other words, they operate on the principle of trust within their relationships.
The organizations were identified using a snowball sampling method and by searching specialized websites and news sources. This sampling technique relies on reference networks and recommendations, which is particularly useful when the research universe is not well-defined.
The presented results are not exhaustive and do not represent the entirety of the field, as there is no consolidation of all organizations active in Brazil that meet the specified criteria. However, these findings are quite significant for understanding how community philanthropy and social justice are shaped in the country today.
