LAB Jovens: French Embassy Program supports projects in the fight for climate justice

By Regilon Matos

With the aim of raising awareness and training youth on environmental issues, to reduce the effects of global warming and ensure climate balance, the French Embassy in partnership with the Casa Socioambiental Fund and a network of organizations, will hold the third edition of LAB Jovens (Laboratório Ambiental Brasil Jovens), a program that mobilizes young people between 18 and 26 years old for support and training, with the support of tools, mentoring and all necessary support to develop action projects in their territories, and in the end the opportunity to receive support from a seed fund. The journey is 100% online and free, and I, Regilon Matos, had the opportunity to participate in the first edition in 2021.

The Casa Fund is dedicated to the field of socio-environmental philanthropy, making resources reach directly into the hands of the real guardians of ecosystems, in order to promote sustainable development, giving groups more autonomy and protagonism. Therefore, supporting youth projects is enhancing the project's action as they are able to bring together a huge diversity of ideas and mobilize a greater number of engaged people, in addition to a focus on innovative actions and connected with other more contemporary forms provided by youth protagonism. And the Casa Fund's support for the program's Seed Fund is in line with our mission of supporting collective initiatives and encouraging young people's activism to be awakened by bringing other forms of action to the socio-environmental justice agenda.

Alliance between Funds: for another collaborative philanthropy under construction in Brazil

By Allyne Andrade e Silva, Angélica Basthi, Cristina Orpheo and Fernanda Lopes

Although collaboration is an old practice among philanthropic organizations, the idea of “collaborative philanthropy” is relatively new. In Brazil, this is a concept still under construction. Here, he has been encouraging the creation of new arrangements in the field of philanthropy for social justice.

However, none of these initiatives have experienced bold and innovative action as has been practiced by the Baobá Fund for Racial Equity, the Brazilian Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund within the scope of the Alliance between Funds, which emerged in 2021.

By Regilon Matos – Casa Socio-Environmental Fund

Youth no longer want to be just a token of inclusion; they want to have a voice and a place in conferences that discuss the future of the Planet and the Climate Emergency.

Because of the current economic, social and environmental situation, it is important that the already awakened young become ever more vigilant and determined to take their place where decisions are being made, to enter into the political arena and the halls of civil society, becoming multiplying agents who will positively influence other leaders with their enhanced vision of present day actions and their determination to insure a better future for all.

There is no time to waste: Youth are in a hurry and so is the planet

By Regilon Matos

Youth no longer want to be just a token of inclusion, they want to have a voice and a place in conferences that discuss the future of the Planet and the Climate Emergency.

Given the current economic, social and environmental situation in our country and the world, it is important that young people are now awakened, become increasingly vigilant and determined to take their place where decisions are made, enter the political arena and the spaces of civil society, for a transversal debate with diplomats, CEOS, presidents, activists and third sector coordinators. In this way, becoming multiplier agents who will positively influence other leaders with their improved vision of current actions and their determination to guarantee a better future for all.

Support for quilombola communities: Creating bridges for good living

By Attilio Zolin

The quilombola peoples of Brazil have a great relationship with the nature around their territories and pass on their traditional and ancestral knowledge from generation to generation, which involves a rich and diverse culture. According to data from IBGE and the National Coordination of Quilombos Articulation (CONAQ), it is estimated that there are around 6 thousand quilombola locations in Brazil. Among these communities, only 5% are in officially recognized and demarcated territories. These communities suffer from the consequences of structural racism, invisibility and threats to their territories. Recently, difficulties have multiplied following the impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the lack of access to public health services, economic difficulties and, consequently, food insecurity.

Donation and empathy in emergency situations

We are living in a time of emergency unprecedented in recent decades. Our human arrogance of knowing everything is directly linked to a mistaken socioeconomic model. This society found itself walled in and cornered (literally) by a virus. The world suddenly found itself surrounded by a life-threatening threat, unexpected for many. Unfortunately, in calamity situations, the most vulnerable people are always the most affected, precisely those who have always had their rights denied, who have never been part of the benefits offered to the privileged.

What is the donor's true motivation?

A Brazil-based fund is pursuing an approach to funding Indigenous Peoples which is more attuned to their worldview

'In Brazil… we still rely on foreign help, much like a charity case, which is subordinating and disrespectful of the integrity of the beneficiary.' These are the words of Ailton Krenak, an Indigenous leader and coordinator of the Núcleo de Cultura Indígena (Indigenous Culture Center) and council member of the Casa Socio-Environmental Fund, a fund started by activists to fund grassroots environmental defenders, including Indigenous Peoples.

15 years of Grantmaking and Community Philanthropy

By Cristina Orpheo – Executive Director of the Casa Socioambiental Fund

We live on a connected planet. What happens in our communities, whether in the city, in the countryside or in the forest, can reflect on all territories and affect the lives of the beings that live here.

It is everyone's right to actively participate in decision-making involving their territories. It is also everyone's right to seek ways to live well, in a way that respects the traditional way of life, as well as the surrounding ecosystems, always defending their rights. Most of the time, this is not that simple, but it is the path to building a just and peaceful society. This is democracy! A strengthened, attentive and participatory civil society is a sign of a consolidated democracy. We live in Brazil in a young democracy and, therefore, vulnerable in several aspects.
