A festival to call our own: impressions of what happened at the ABCR Festival and potential contributions to community philanthropy

By Semíramis Biasoli – FunBEA – Brazilian Environmental Education Fund

The 15th edition of the ABCR Festival, a fundraising conference by the Brazilian Association of Fundraisers, took place on July 3rd and 4th, 2023 in the city of São Paulo.

The challenge of welcoming and putting together a program that catered to different levels of knowledge, experiences and interests was a key point and it seems to me that this year's Festival managed to provide these answers. The event provided basic information for those new to fundraising challenges, as well as advanced research and practices, providing cutting-edge content for experienced professionals.

Numerically larger, it also presented a greater diversity of professional areas present: not just counting on an audience of recruiters and collectors, but rather, members of the technical and financial areas, in addition to the strong presence of communication professionals.

It is worth highlighting here: could these be signs of changes in the institutional culture of fundraising, not treating it as a closed or specialized area, on the contrary, presenting it as a collective challenge to the entire organization?

In its wake, we have come across narratives that try to convince us that Brazilians are supportive, that they make regular donations, that these donations are changing indicators in our social structure and that this wave will last post-pandemic. It will be?

What, however, has been missing from this debate is, in my opinion, two central questions: where do these resources come from and where do they go?

ABCR: engaging the community in the organization's sustainability

By João Paulo Vergueiro

At the founding of the Brazilian Association of Fundraisers (ABCR), in 1999, a group of professionals met and decided that it was time for the country to have an institution that promoted the work they were carrying out with so much dedication: mobilizing resources for causes.

Going in a different direction from organizations that relied on international support and funding to leverage themselves, ABCR sought its own path: it refused to be a chapter of the North American Association of Fundraising Professionals and sought to connect with who was on the front line of an activity that has not yet been fully understood and valued in the country: promoting the economic sustainability of civil society organizations.

Donate Day, an opportunity to mobilize resources in the community itself

The 2021 edition of Dia de Doar will be held on November 30th, a Brazilian initiative that is part of the #GivingTuesday network, an international movement whose mission is to unleash the power of radical generosity around the world.

In Brazil, Dia de Doar was held for the first time in 2013. Since then there have been annual editions, with an extra version in 2020, Dia de Doar Agora, which promoted donation during the pandemic.
