Reflections on the institution of collective care in systemic change

By Ese Emerhi, GFCF Global Network Weaver

I ended 2022 with a health problem and spent most of 2023 thinking about the concept of collective care and solidarity in movement building. As part of my reflection, I am reading Tricia Hersey's Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto, in which she argues that rest should be seen as a form of radical political resistance and that “elevating rest from an ethic of community care It involves interrupting the dominant culture and, at the same time, giving power back to the people, which is their rightful place.” Although Hersey's message is directed specifically at black communities in the United States and rejects the culture of relentless work prevalent in society, it resonates with me regarding the need for a cultural mindset shift in the fields of philanthropy and international development, and to the question of why rest is important in the fight for liberation and broader systemic change.

Community Philanthropy as a means to promote socio-environmental justice for LGBTQIA+ people

Celebrating World Environment Day and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, a reflection on how community philanthropy for socio-environmental justice supports LGBTQIA+ people facing climate change.

By Yasmin Morais and Mica Peres

An estimated 12% of all Brazilians, or about 19 million people, identify themselves as LGBTQIA+, however, contrary to what we might assume when presented with the demographic data of a population, this is not official data produced by a Brazilian government agency such as the IBGE (in English, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). This estimate is the result of a study developed by Unesp and USP, published in Nature Scientific Reports, since the IBGE only began collecting data on sexual orientation in Brazil in 2019, and even so, in a highly experimental manner, excluding any aspect of gender identity or sexualities beyond homosexuality and bisexuality.

So, how can we know how many we are, where we are, our level of education? How can we know what affects us, what we need, what rights to claim?

Why talk about Safety and Security in the field of community philanthropy and social justice

By Jonathas Azevedo

In 2023, Rede Comuá carried out a review and systematization of its Protection and Security Program [1], which brought a set of learnings for the technical team and its members. In this article, my objective is to share with you, the reader, some of the reflections that this process provoked in us. But first, it is worth a brief presentation of the Program.

About the Safety and Security Program

Created in 2019, the Rede Comuá Protection and Security Program arose from the interest of member organizations in jointly thinking about strategies to resist a context marked by the resurgence of attacks against civil society and the restriction of civic space promoted by the government far-right party then elected and openly against civil society.

Environmental and climate neglect mostly affects vulnerable groups

By Fernanda Lopes

It is well known that the climate crisis poses substantial risks to health, food production, water supply, ecosystems, energy, security and infrastructure. Although climate change affects the entire planet, a part of society is disproportionately affected by social, economic, political, environmental and sociocultural issues. Both crisis and change exacerbate existing inequalities and exclusions resulting from intersecting histories of colonialism, racism, oppression and discrimination.

In Brazil, 82.5% of the population, estimated at 212.7 million people by IBGE in 2021, resides in urban areas. Urban space is segregated, and in areas characterized by housing in unsuitable conditions for housing and a lack of fundamental infrastructure services, the majority of the resident population is black.

Collaborative philanthropy is rooted in African communal practice. Let's reclaim it.

By Samra Ghermay, associate director of client engagement, Wingo NYC Fundraising Studio

Anyone who knows me, knows I love a good African proverb. I grew up hearing these sayings as commentary on my actions — the not-so-silent judgments on the quality of my cries, the are-you-sure-about-that questions about my decisions, the life lessons waiting to be discovered from a respected elder waiting to impart them on me. Proverbs are built into our stories and were how my elders communicated messages to my sisters and me, how we were implicitly told to do certain things. Proverbs were essentially a coded game. And we happily accepted the challenge and grew all the better for it.

In philanthropy, we have all heard and have possibly even used the African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.”

Collaborative Philanthropy originates from African community practice: we need to reclaim it

Por Samra Ghermay

Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good African proverb. I grew up hearing these sayings as comments on my actions – the not-so-silent judgments about the quality of my tasks, the “are you sure about this” questions regarding my decisions, the life lessons to be revealed by a respected elder, who was waiting for the opportunity to transmit them to me. Proverbs are embedded in our stories and are how my elders communicated messages to my sisters and me, and how we were tacitly instructed to do certain things. Proverbs were essentially a game in code. And we accept the challenge with joy and with that we mature even more.

Na filantropia, todos nós já ouvimos e muito provavelmente já usamos o provérbio africano: “É preciso uma aldeia inteira para se educar uma criança”.
