Cerrado Day: how community philanthropy can help conserve the biome

With the aim of debating and presenting practical examples of philanthropy for socio-environmental justice in the context of preserving the Cerrado, Rede Comuá, the Instituto Sociedade, População e Natureza (ISPN), Fundo Casa Socioambiental and Rede Cerrado will promote, on the 15th , the “Dialogue on the Importance of Community Philanthropy in the Conservation of the Cerrado and the Culture of Its Peoples”, during the X Meeting and Fair of the Peoples of the Cerrado, in Brasília.

Do you know what microprojects are? And how do you access them? This video presents this ISPN initiative that aims to promote the activities of indigenous groups, peoples and traditional communities in maintaining their cultural practices, their well-being, defending their rights and implementing their environmental management and conservation strategies. Microprojects are a small line of financing with unbureaucratic access to encourage individual or family actions in the areas of traditional agricultural systems and food security; traditional land and natural resource management practices; and cultural manifestations.

Cerrado could lose a third of its water, study shows

Deforestation for monoculture and pasture is mainly responsible for the 34% decrease in river flow by 2050

In the Cerrado, 93% of the basins may have a reduction in water availability, this is what the study The heavy impact of deforestation and climate change on the streamflows of the Brazilian Cerrado biome and a worrying future, supported by ISPN, points out. According to research, the biome could lose 34% of its water flow over the next 28 years. The study being reviewed by the scientific journal Sustainability concluded that deforestation is the main cause of this decrease, responsible for 56% of the impact. 23,653 m³/s could be lost by 2050, in the rivers analyzed in the study alone, this loss is equivalent to the flow of eight Nile rivers.

Guajajara indigenous people take part in environmental and territorial management actions in Maranhão

Guided by sensitivity, solidarity and empathy, Guajajara indigenous women from the Caru Indigenous Land, located in the west of the State of Maranhão, carry out environmental and territorial management actions on their ancestral lands. These women form the Guerreiras da Floresta collective, which since 2014 has supported and promoted territorial protection actions together with the Guardians of the Forest, in defense of indigenous territories and cultures.

Guajajara indigenous peoples promote environmental and territorial management actions in the State of Maranhão

Focusing on sensitivity, solidarity and empathy, indigenous Guajajara women from the Caru Indigenous Land, located in the western region of the State of Maranhão, are taking part in environmental and territorial management actions in their ancestral lands. These women make up the Forest Warriors collective (“Guerreiras da Floresta”), which, since 2014, supports and promotes territorial protection actions alongside the Guardians of the Forest, in defense of indigenous cultures and territories.

Thematic table at the Network's 10th anniversary Seminar brought together Human Rights and the Environment

Organized by the Society, Population and Nature Institute (ISPN), the table “Innovation, technologies and vulnerabilities: strengthening communities and the fight for socio-environmental justice” brought four technological initiatives/platforms that work with issues linked to the socio-environmental field. The projects address solutions and paths to situations of marginalization, invisibility and risk for people in vulnerable situations. The debate and reflections highlighted the synchrony between human rights and environmental protection, reaffirming that there is no way to think about philanthropic actions without these two aspects interacting with each other.
