Black Philanthropy in Brazil: Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos receives donation of R$ 500 thousand from Fundo Baobá

Among the many inspiring stories that illustrate the tradition of black philanthropy in Brazil, one deserves special attention: the foundation of the Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos (SPD), in the city of Salvador, Bahia, on September 16, 1832, by Manoel Vitor Serra , a freed black African. The Protector, as it was known, was a historic milestone in the fight against inequality and racial discrimination. Founded by black workers, the organization's main objective was to provide mutual aid and support to the most needy. Through its philanthropic actions, the society supported enslaved people to obtain their manumission, as well as supporting members who became unemployed.

Environmental and climate neglect mostly affects vulnerable groups

By Fernanda Lopes

It is well known that the climate crisis poses substantial risks to health, food production, water supply, ecosystems, energy, security and infrastructure. Although climate change affects the entire planet, a part of society is disproportionately affected by social, economic, political, environmental and sociocultural issues. Both crisis and change exacerbate existing inequalities and exclusions resulting from intersecting histories of colonialism, racism, oppression and discrimination.

In Brazil, 82.5% of the population, estimated at 212.7 million people by IBGE in 2021, resides in urban areas. Urban space is segregated, and in areas characterized by housing in unsuitable conditions for housing and a lack of fundamental infrastructure services, the majority of the resident population is black.

Alliance between Funds: for another collaborative philanthropy under construction in Brazil

By Allyne Andrade e Silva, Angélica Basthi, Cristina Orpheo and Fernanda Lopes

Although collaboration is an old practice among philanthropic organizations, the idea of “collaborative philanthropy” is relatively new. In Brazil, this is a concept still under construction. Here, he has been encouraging the creation of new arrangements in the field of philanthropy for social justice.

However, none of these initiatives have experienced bold and innovative action as has been practiced by the Baobá Fund for Racial Equity, the Brazilian Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund within the scope of the Alliance between Funds, which emerged in 2021.

Support for quilombola communities: Creating bridges for good living

By Attilio Zolin

The quilombola peoples of Brazil have a great relationship with the nature around their territories and pass on their traditional and ancestral knowledge from generation to generation, which involves a rich and diverse culture. According to data from IBGE and the National Coordination of Quilombos Articulation (CONAQ), it is estimated that there are around 6 thousand quilombola locations in Brazil. Among these communities, only 5% are in officially recognized and demarcated territories. These communities suffer from the consequences of structural racism, invisibility and threats to their territories. Recently, difficulties have multiplied following the impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the lack of access to public health services, economic difficulties and, consequently, food insecurity.

Philanthropy and Racial Equity in Brazil

By Selma Moreira & Fernanda Lopes

The relationship between the black population and philanthropy is ancient, with the greatest expression being the Black Brotherhoods. Created during the colonial period, these organizational structures enabled black people to occupy and define forms of social action, to cover expenses for a minimum standard of dignity, funerals, for example. They were spaces of resistance and solidarity in the face of the hostility imposed by slavery. Currently, of the 207.8 million who reside in Brazil, 46.5% declared themselves mixed race, 9.3% black and 43.1% white.

Philanthropy, yes, but philanthropy for racial equity…?

Despite a large Black population, Brazil has struggled to mount an effective response to racial inequality

Fundo Baobá launched a collection of black dolls with Estrela to educate children about respect and diversity.

The relationship between philanthropy and the black population is long-standing, the best expression of it being the Black Sisterhoods. Dating back to the colonial era, these institutions allowed blacks to assume and define forms of social engagement, and to pay expenses with some dignity for things such as funerals. They represented resistance and solidarity against the hostility of the colonial mentality. Today, out of the 207.8 million people in Brazil, 55.8 per cent describe themselves as brown, 9.3 per cent as black, and 43.1 per cent as white. Black and brown people form the Afro-Brazilian group or black population. However, despite these figures and the efforts of institutions like the Black Sisterhoods, philanthropy in Brazil has been slow to take up the cause of promoting racial equity.

Sowing the values of black philanthropy: the pandemic and the actions of the Baobá Fund

By Fernanda Lopes

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization – WHO declared the disease caused by the new coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2) a pandemic. On April 3, 2020, the Baobá Fund for Racial Equity – the first and only philanthropic fund that mobilizes people and resources, in Brazil and abroad, to exclusively support projects and actions to promote racial equity for the black population in Brazil, mobilized to publish and widely disseminate the Notice of Emergency Donations to Combat Coronavirus. At that moment, when we were asked why we would issue a notice, we explained that, in our assessment, the notice would allow us to map individual or organizational initiatives that sought to respond, in the best way, to the most immediate needs of the community, assuming a lower risk of focus support on groups with more access to the philanthropic ecosystem.
