COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY

Weaving a thread between the research of the first edition of the Saberes Program: Possibilities of Community Philanthropy in Brazil through Collaboration in a Network of Researchers

Community philanthropy represents a fertile field for social innovation, bringing together a variety of actors and organizations that come together to promote positive change in communities. The way in which the transfer of resources, whether financial, technical or intellectual, reaches the grassroots is, without a doubt, a component of great social impact. In this scenario, the strategic work of individuals and organizations, such as Associação Nossa Cidade, ICOM, FunBEA, ISPN, among others, gain prominence and connections through the Saberes Program, an initiative of Rede Comuá. These organizations, and especially these individuals, have dedicated themselves to social transformation and positive impact on their respective communities and territories.

Brazil Donation Survey 2022: Reflections and Contributions of Community Philanthropy and Social Justice

In August 2022, IDIS (Institute for the Development of Social Investment) and Ipsos launched the Brazil 2022 Donation Survey, with the aim of bringing to light the donation landscape, which provides crucial information about the motivations, perceptions and expectations of donors and non-donors in the country.

This text aims to present some reflections on the research results, highlighting the aspects that caught our attention, pointing to gaps and future paths to deepen the study and its implications for the culture of donation in Brazil. Furthermore, we seek to offer a perspective on how community philanthropy and socio-environmental justice can contribute to this discussion.

Community Philanthropy as a means to promote socio-environmental justice for LGBTQIA+ people

Celebrating World Environment Day and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, a reflection on how community philanthropy for socio-environmental justice supports LGBTQIA+ people facing climate change.

By Yasmin Morais and Mica Peres

An estimated 12% of all Brazilians, or about 19 million people, identify themselves as LGBTQIA+, however, contrary to what we might assume when presented with the demographic data of a population, this is not official data produced by a Brazilian government agency such as the IBGE (in English, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). This estimate is the result of a study developed by Unesp and USP, published in Nature Scientific Reports, since the IBGE only began collecting data on sexual orientation in Brazil in 2019, and even so, in a highly experimental manner, excluding any aspect of gender identity or sexualities beyond homosexuality and bisexuality.

So, how can we know how many we are, where we are, our level of education? How can we know what affects us, what we need, what rights to claim?

By Jonathas Azevedo

After three planes, two connections and more than 20 hours of travel, I arrived in Entebbe, Uganda, with the mission of representing Rede Comuá in two activities: the meeting of partners of the Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), the only organization focused exclusively on growing community philanthropy globally as a central pillar of people-led development, and the African Philanthropy Network (formerly known as the African Grantmakers' Network) conference, the first since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which The theme this year was “Driving Change”, in free translation (Driving Change, in English). Both are also partner organizations in the Donate to Transform Program.

Between challenges and hope, philanthropies that resist

By Luisa Hernandez and Jonathas Azevedo

Influencing the field of philanthropy is not an easy task. The reproduction of colonial structures, racism, misogyny, LGBTIphobia and other forms of violence make philanthropy an environment that can still be very exclusionary, especially for political minorities. The Philanthropy, Social Justice, Civil Society and Democracy Seminar of Rede Comuá, held on the 20th and 21st of September in São Paulo, was an important reminder to everyone present, however, that philanthropy can also be a space of resistance , struggle, collaboration and, especially, hope.

Between the challenges and hope, philanthropies (in plural) that resist

Doing advocacy work in the field of philanthropy is not an easy task. The reproduction of colonial structures, racism, misogyny, LGBTIphobia and other diverse forms of violence make philanthropy an environment that can still be very exclusionary, especially for minority groups. However, Comuá Network's 10th Anniversary Seminar “Philanthropy, Social Justice, Civil Society and Democracy”, held on the 20th and 21st of September in São Paulo, was an important reminder to all those present that philanthropy can also be a space for resistance, struggle , collaboration and, especially, hope .
