Overview of the response of member organizations of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice in the context of the pandemic: resources donated to civil society

The 12 organizations that make up the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice are social justice funds, community funds and community foundations, donor organizations that support civil society in Brazil (CSOs, NGOs, movements, groups, collectives, networks, leaders, rights defenders etc.). They donate to initiatives in the field of human rights, social justice and community development and were created throughout the 2000s in the face of a reduction in resources from philanthropy and international cooperation to respond to the vacuum in funding generated within civil society, a consequence this withdrawal process.

The impact of the pandemic on Brazilian social organizations: how to face the crisis situation in the present and future scenario?

In August, Mobiliza together with Reos Partners and strategic partners from the philanthropic sector launched the complete report of the study “Impact of COVID-19 on Brazilian CSOs: from immediate response to resilience”. 

The study sought to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Brazilian civil society organizations and how the sector planned the development of actions and prepared (or is preparing) to face the post-crisis scenario. To this end, a questionnaire was prepared for civil society organizations, from which 1760 valid responses were received, 34% from the social assistance area, 21% that do not have an annual budget forecast and 21% that have an annual budget forecast of up to R$100 thousand . Responses from all Brazilian regions were computed.

Social justice philanthropy: Is it possible to talk about collaborative philanthropy and participatory grantmaking without considering issues related to human rights and social justice?

In 2018, when the book “Philanthropy of social justice, civil society and social movements in Brazil” [1] was released, one of the fundamental questions that motivated the production of the publication was to put into perspective the concepts of philanthropy and grantmaking [2] of justice social situation at the heart of the debate. In fact, one of the main theses raised throughout the collection was that in Brazil the concept of philanthropy historically carries pejorative connotations and is normally associated with charitable actions. To overcome this trend, the concept of private social investment (ISP) was installed, often replacing the notion of philanthropy) as it is commonly “more accepted” by civil society and the citizen sector.

FunBEA is the newest member of the Social Justice Philanthropy Network

The Brazilian Environmental Education Fund – FunBEA – became the thirteenth member organization of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice. The Fund, which since 2012 has worked to strengthen permanent environmentalist educational collectives and processes, works with a critical conception of the ways of living in current societies. As a mission, the Fund has sought to capture and transfer resources to strengthen the capillarity of projects, in addition to identifying and articulating Environmental Education initiatives for support throughout the national territory.

The Network announces a new program with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Giving for Change Program

The Philanthropy Network for Social Justice started the Giving for Change Program (GFC) in 2021 with support from Dutch cooperation. The GFC is led by an international consortium made up of four organizations that will be responsible for overall coordination: Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), African Philanthropy Network (APN); Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) and Wilde Ganzen (WG). The Program will last five years and have a total budget of 24 million euros, and was selected by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the scope of the Power of Voices notice. It will be developed in eight countries in the Global South: Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Palestine and Uganda. Brazil's participation in the context of this Program is certainly significant in the proposal to strengthen South-South cooperation.
