Training in Political Advocacy in Politics in Maré

This article aims to present the initiative related to the “Month of Philanthropy that Transforms”, carried out by Redes da Maré in partnership with Rede Comuá. Throughout September, we planned and organized training in Political Incidence aimed at residents of the group of 16 Maré favelas, located in the north of Rio de Janeiro. For us, thinking about philanthropic actions that are capable of impacting in the medium and long term the history of inequalities that we experience in the group of Maré favelas is urgent and structuring for the change we want in the world.

Philanthropy that Transforms Month promoted debates and connections

The month of September, dedicated to giving visibility and debating the practices of community philanthropy and socio-environmental justice, focused debates, productions and sharing of knowledge around these agendas.

Rede Comuá, its member organizations and partners collaboratively promoted 39 in-person and/or virtual activities, which generated 177 hours of transformative content for Brazilian philanthropy and more than 200 materials produced and/or shared.

Comuá launches mapping of independent donor organizations

Rede Comuá, in partnership with pontAponte, launched, on September 5th, the publication “Philanthropy that transforms: mapping of independent donor organizations for civil society in the areas of socio-environmental justice and community development in Brazil”.

The online event was attended by 165 people, and had as guests Cássio Aoqui, from PonteAponte; Cristina Orpheo, from the Casa Socioambiental Fund; Gelson Henrique, from the PIPA Initiative; and Ese Emerhi, from the Global Fund for Community Foundations. The mediation was carried out by Graciela Hopstein, executive director of Rede Comuá.

Cerrado Day: how community philanthropy can help conserve the biome

With the aim of debating and presenting practical examples of philanthropy for socio-environmental justice in the context of preserving the Cerrado, Rede Comuá, the Instituto Sociedade, População e Natureza (ISPN), Fundo Casa Socioambiental and Rede Cerrado will promote, on the 15th , the “Dialogue on the Importance of Community Philanthropy in the Conservation of the Cerrado and the Culture of Its Peoples”, during the X Meeting and Fair of the Peoples of the Cerrado, in Brasília.

Month of philanthropy that transforms: find out about some of the scheduled activities

Rede Comuá, together with its member organizations and partners, promotes, in September, a series of activities aimed at demonstrating the potency and importance of community philanthropy and socio-environmental justice to foster social transformation by supporting civil society organizations and movements in their struggles for rights.

The movement, which started in September 2022 after the ten-year seminar of the Comuá Network, will be part of the Brazilian philanthropy calendar annually as a space dedicated to addressing the practices and strategic performance of this philanthropy in the sense of strengthening civil society and, so does democracy.

September: Transforming Philanthropy Month

A diverse, multifaceted movement aiming to promote greater visibility to the agendas and practices of community and social justice philanthropy in Brazil

In September 2022, the Comuá Network organized the Philanthropy, Social Justice, Civil Society and Democracy Seminar to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Around it, the Network managed to mobilize 220 participants, who attended the seminar in São Paulo during the two days of debates, 360 people online, 110 organizations, 50 speakers, in addition to 35 institutional supporters and 6 funders who sponsored the event directly.

During those 21 hours of activities, Comuá, its members and partners debated and reflected on a variety of topics, such as decolonizing philanthropy, building trust and creating new arrangements, to reach new horizons that ultimately change the existing power dynamics and foster initiatives to build a less inequitable society (in terms of access to rights) and recognize political minorities.

In September 2022, Rede Comuá organized the Philanthropy, Social Justice, Civil Society and Democracy Seminar to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its activities. In this context, the Network was able to mobilize 220 participants, who were present in São Paulo over the two days of debates, 360 people online, 110 organizations, 50 speakers, in addition to 35 institutional supporters and 6 funders who directly supported the event.

In 21 hours of activities, Comuá, its associates and partners were able to debate and reflect on a variety of topics such as decolonial philanthropy, trust and new arrangements, aiming at horizons that translate into changing power relations and fostering initiatives aimed at building a less unequal society (with regard to access to rights) and recognition of political minorities.

The initiative seeks to continue the debates and reflections that have been held in the field of philanthropy, involving and recognizing a multiplicity of actors, communities and territories in discussions and activities, mainly around themes linked to the transformation of philanthropic practices for the strengthening of society civil society as a key sector for the maintenance and expansion of Brazilian democracy.
