No dia 19 de setembro, às 10h, a Rede Comuá realiza a roda de conversa online “Como os saberes das comunidades desafiam e transformam o campo filantrópico”. O encontro  reunirá as pessoas pesquisadoras da turma 2024 do Programa Saberes que, através das suas pesquisas, visibilizam os saberes das comunidades e a importância deles para desafiar as estruturas de poder e as práticas da filantropia tradicional.

Beyond the discourse: what is philanthropy’s real commitment to transformation?

Between the 3rd and 5th of October, Nairobi, capital of Kenya, hosted the first WINGSForum post-COVID-19 pandemic. A global meeting of the WINGS philanthropy network, the event was co-organized by the African Philanthropy Network, also a partner of Rede Comuá under the Donate to Transform Program, and brought together 350 people from more than 50 countries under the motto “transforming philanthropy to transform the world".

Let's decolonize philanthropy, yes!

This article is a response from Rede Comuá to the text published by João Paulo Vergueiro entitled “Decolonizing philanthropy is a concept that does not fit in Brazil”

Rede Comuá has been guiding the discussion on the decolonization of philanthropy for some time, both through published articles and debates held in various spaces, both nationally and internationally. 

To position ourselves in the face of the thesis that decolonization is a concept that does not fit in Brazil, it would be enough just to mention the article published by Graciela Hopstein and Allyne Andrade in Alliance Magazine in 2022 and translated by Rede Comuá into Portuguese, published on the blog of Rede Comuá “The decolonization of philanthropy is advancing” .

Is the decolonization of philanthropy advancing?

The colonialist mentality has contaminated philanthropy practices in Brazil, but there are transformative ways to overcome it

Traditionally, philanthropy has been structured around an extractive colonialist logic. Coloniality of power is a term coined by Anibal Quijano to characterize the typical pattern of global domination in the modern capitalist system, whose origins date back to European colonialism at the beginning of the 16th century. Throughout the colonial process, Europe positioned itself as the central point of civilization, most advanced in the development process, not only of politics and economics, but also of humanity itself.
