Alliance between Funds: for another collaborative philanthropy under construction in Brazil

Although collaboration is an old practice among philanthropic organizations, the idea of “collaborative philanthropy” is relatively new. In Brazil, this is a concept still under construction. Here, he has been encouraging the creation of new arrangements in the field of philanthropy for social justice.

However, none of these initiatives have experienced bold and innovative action as has been practiced by the Baobá Fund for Racial Equity, the Brazilian Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund within the scope of the Alliance between Funds, which emerged in 2021.

The importance of supporting quilombolas and indigenous people in facing the COVID-19 pandemic

In 2022, an investment of R$2.5 million is being allocated to quilombola communities and indigenous peoples in several Brazilian states through the Baobá Racial Equity Fund; the Brazilian Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund, brought together in an unprecedented initiative in Brazil: the Alliance between Funds.

The Alliance between Funds is a collaborative philanthropy initiative to support invisible and more vulnerable populations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Support for quilombola communities: Creating bridges for good living

The quilombola peoples of Brazil have a great relationship with the nature around their territories and pass on their traditional and ancestral knowledge from generation to generation, which involves a rich and diverse culture. According to data from IBGE and the National Coordination of Quilombos Articulation (CONAQ), it is estimated that there are around 6 thousand quilombola locations in Brazil. Among these communities, only 5% are in officially recognized and demarcated territories. These communities suffer from the consequences of structural racism, invisibility and threats to their territories. Recently, difficulties have multiplied following the impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the lack of access to public health services, economic difficulties and, consequently, food insecurity.

An Alliance is born to strengthen support for community groups in combating Covid-19

How philanthropy is supporting the fight against the pandemic

The Covid-19 Emergency survey, carried out by GIFE, presents an analysis of the emergency actions of different organizations in the field of philanthropy and social investment, and reveals that there was a strong response from this sector in building actions to minimize the impacts of the pandemic. Regarding resource allocation, in a group of 98 organizations interviewed, 78% stated that they invested in final initiatives to combat Covid-19. Regarding the amount allocated, the research shows that the sum of 69 organizations resulted in a total value of R$ 2 billion. Compared to the amount invested in other initiatives and in the management of these organizations, this amount is 1.9 times higher.
