Between the 5th and 10th of November, Rede Comuá was present in Entebbe, Uganda, to participate in the meeting of partner organizations of the Global Fund for Community Foundations, as well as the African Philanthropy Network conference

After three planes, two connections and more than 20 hours of travel, I arrived in Entebbe, Uganda, with the mission of representing Rede Comuá in two activities: the meeting of partners of the Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), the only organization focused exclusively on growing community philanthropy globally as a central pillar of people-led development, and the African Philanthropy Network (formerly known as the African Grantmakers' Network) conference, the first since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which The theme this year was “Driving Change”, in free translation (Driving Change, in English). Both are also partner organizations in the Donate to Transform Program.

The Philanthropy Network for Social Justice started the Giving for Change Program (GFC) in 2021 with support from Dutch cooperation. The GFC is led by an international consortium made up of four organizations that will be responsible for overall coordination: Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), African Philanthropy Network (APN); Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) and Wilde Ganzen (WG). The Program will last five years and have a total budget of 24 million euros, and was selected by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the scope of the Power of Voices notice. It will be developed in eight countries in the Global South: Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Palestine and Uganda. Brazil's participation in the context of this Program is certainly significant in the proposal to strengthen South-South cooperation.

The executive coordination of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice and its governance team are committed to structuring the Donate to Transform program. The proposal is to carry out organic planning, which is at the same time integrated and complementary to the Network's existing lines of action, with support from the IAF and Porticus structured through the Support and Capacity Strengthening programs. With Donate to Transform, in addition to the two existing programs, the Network inaugurates a new programmatic line focused on advocacy, with the aim of influencing the agenda in the national and international philanthropic ecosystem, with themes such as social justice, community philanthropy, shifting the power and strengthening of civil society actors in guaranteeing rights and expression.

Since the beginning of 2021, the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice has been dedicated to structuring and developing the Donate to Transform Program. We have already shared here the beginning of these movements in the contributions of Graciela Hopstein and Betina Sarue in the articles “The Network announces a new program with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Giving for Change Program” and “Building the Donate to Transform program”. In these texts, the authors present the program and define its main objective: “[…] to promote community philanthropy and social justice as a strategy to achieve development led by communities, strengthening the demand for rights.”

The Donate to Transform Program – implemented with support from Dutch Cooperation – is organically integrated with the actions that the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice (RFJS) has been developing since 2018. The production of content on community and justice philanthropy social was already a priority line of action, which is now organized organically with the launch of the Donate to Transform Seal, a collection of publications that reflect this reflection. Strengthening the Network and its members is a central strategy of the program that will now be aligned with the advocacy program, which aims to boost and position the community philanthropy and social justice agenda in the Brazilian philanthropic ecosystem, expanding and strengthening organizations in the civil society committed to social justice, seeking to progressively increase donations (grantmaking actions).

The Support Program was significant for the member organizations as it contributed to strengthening networking and exchange between peers, promoting the sharing of experiences and this is, without a doubt, one of the main results achieved.
Implemented between 2020 and 2021, the Support Program for member organizations of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice, had support from the Inter-American Foundation (IAF), and was aimed at strengthening members as members of the Network, seeking to promote exchange of experiences and learning and the articulation of partnerships. This initiative was developed in the context of the Network Strengthening Program, involving capacity development actions through online meetings and workshops.

This interview is part of a series of dialogues carried out by the Global Fund by Community Foundations with the main partners of the Donate to Transform program, developed with support from Dutch Cooperation, which will invest €24 million for its implementation and will last five years. The Program is implemented in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Palestine and Uganda, being led by a consortium made up of four organizations: the African Philanthropy Network, the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF), the Global Fund Community Foundations (GFCF) and the Wilde Ganzen Foundation. The goal of the Program – which is part of the Dutch government's 'Power of Voices' program – is to encourage local donations as a form of voice expression, civic participation, solidarity and dissent from political minorities. Donate to Transform will build evidence around new thinking and approaches that support the development of community philanthropy.
