Comuá Network Launches Publication on Social Movements and Philanthropy in Brazil

Study explores the role of Brazilian philanthropy in funding and supporting social movements and the self-financing strategies of these movements

Social movements play a fundamental role in defending and promoting rights, contributing significantly to the construction and consolidation of democracy. Historically, these movements have been essential in resisting authoritarian regimes and promoting democratization in Brazil. In the current scenario, they face new challenges due to the advance of the far right and the growing violence against minorities and human rights defenders.

Based on these premises, the Comuá Network launches the publication “Social Movements and Philanthropy in Brazil”. Developed from a literature review, interviews, and focus groups, the material explores the role of Brazilian philanthropy in funding and supporting social movements.

The research also examines the self-financing strategies of these movements, the challenges faced, and the impact of philanthropic support on their work. It also analyzes the differences in philanthropic approaches and highlights the need for greater involvement of private social investment to strengthen social movements and promote significant social and political changes.

The urgency of climate justice, racial justice, in their diverse expressions and intersections; LGBTQphobia, sexism, misogyny, and other forms of discrimination and reproduction of violence call for the engagement of other actors in Brazilian philanthropy, especially private social investment, to support social movements that fight for the recognition of these agendas in various spheres – both state and other sectors of the public sphere.

An analysis that aims to contribute to the national and international debate, as well as to stimulate reflections on how Brazilian philanthropy can potentiate the struggle of social movements in the country to build alternative futures.

The launch will take place on December 4th, starting at 10:00 AM (Brasilia time), in a virtual panel on the Zoom platform. The event will feature the participation of Mariana de Paula [Instituto Decodifica]; Halima Mahomed [Thiqa Consulting and PSJP]; and Ana Valéria de Araújo [Fundo Brasil de Direitos Humanos].

Jonathas Azevedo [Rede Comuá] and Gelson Henrique [Iniciativa Pipa], responsible for coordination and research, will present the data. The panel will be moderated and commented on by Graciela Hopstein, responsible for the overall coordination and content curation.

Simultaneous translation into English will be provided.
