Why is it urgent to democratize private social investment in Brazil?

By Gelson Henrique, Marcelle Decothé and Raull Santiago

It is nothing new to see that organizations, collectives and movements based in favela and peripheral areas carry out urgent work that has a direct social, political and economic impact on their communities and territories in Brazil. However, the visibility of the challenges that these groups have in accessing private social investment in the country – which operates based on structural inequalities of race, gender and class – is something that drives the imagination of our actions.

How philanthropy is supporting the fight against the pandemic

The Covid-19 Emergency survey, carried out by GIFE, presents an analysis of the emergency actions of different organizations in the field of philanthropy and social investment, and reveals that there was a strong response from this sector in building actions to minimize the impacts of the pandemic. Regarding resource allocation, in a group of 98 organizations interviewed, 78% stated that they invested in final initiatives to combat Covid-19. Regarding the amount allocated, the research shows that the sum of 69 organizations resulted in a total value of R$ 2 billion. Compared to the amount invested in other initiatives and in the management of these organizations, this amount is 1.9 times higher.

Philanthropy Network and Funds continue the collective communication strategy

Communication has always been one of the greatest challenges for civil society organizations that work with human rights and socio-environmental justice. In addition to the content itself, the ways in which this content is produced and delivered to target audiences are also points of permanent reflection.

In 2021, the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice (RFJS) launched the publication “Challenges in communicating community philanthropy and social justice”. The material brings together a series of texts produced from collective interviews, carried out with communicators from the RFJS Member Funds, promoted with the aim of mapping and analyzing the challenges for this communication and to give visibility to the strategies developed.

In Brazil, Dia de Doar was held for the first time in 2013. Since then there have been annual editions, with an extra version in 2020, Dia de Doar Agora, which promoted donation during the pandemic.

Social movements in times of pandemic: the time for philanthropy has arrived

The global Coronavirus pandemic could be the biggest crisis we will ever experience. The current situation has the potential to not only disrupt the status quo, but also to forever change our social, economic and political systems. This scenario requires that big plans be put on hold, that we focus on being present and think about doing what feels right at this precise moment. As guest editors of the Alliance's June 2020 issue on the relationship between philanthropy and social movements, we couldn't help but wonder about financing and forms of organization in a time of social distancing.

Social movements in times of pandemic: the moment for philanthropy has arrived

The global Corona pandemic might very well be the biggest crisis of our lifetime. The current situation has the potential to not only disrupt the status quo but to change our social, economic and political systems forever. It demands us to suspend great plans, focus on being present and think about what feels right in the current moment. As guest editors of Alliance's June 2020 special feature on the relationship between philanthropy and social movements, we asked ourselves about funding social movements and alternative forms of organizing in a time of social distancing.

Civil society action and lessons learned from Covid-19

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and the installation of quarantine in the country's main cities quickly presented a new reality for millions of Brazilians. Social isolation is the main measure to minimize the effects of COVID-19 and reduce the virus's spread curve. However, this measure has side effects, such as a decrease in economic activities, an increase in unemployment and the risk of a global recession. Brazil is not alone in this dilemma. The world finds itself facing an unprecedented crisis, with the task of saving lives and reinventing the future.
