To celebrate the Month of Philanthropy that Transforms, Agência Pública invites its advisor, professor Rosental Calmon Alves, holder of the UNESCO Chair in Communication and the Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, in the United States, and Maia Fortes, Director Executive of the Digital Journalism Association, and Natália Passafaro, for a conversation with Natalia Viana, executive director of Pública.
The event will be a reflection on the role of non-profit journalism in the Brazilian and international media scenario and how it allows to increase the independence of journalistic work. Bringing concrete examples, the speakers will also talk about the importance of public interest journalism for defending democracy and qualifying public debate. We will also talk about the role of Brazilian philanthropy in this scenario of expansion of non-profit journalism.

Natalia Viana
Natalia Viana is co-founder and executive director of Agência Pública. She is the author and co-author of five books about human rights violations, the latest being Collateral Damage, about the return of the military to politics (Objetiva, 2021). As a reporter and editor, she won several journalism awards, including the Vladimir Herzog Human Rights Award), the Trofeu Mulher Imprensa award, the Gabriel García Márquez award and the Ortega y Gasset award. In 2018, she was recognized as a social entrepreneur by the Ashoka network and joined the Board of Directors of the Gabriel García Márquez Foundation. He was a fellow at the Nieman Foundation, at Harvard, in 2021/2022 and a member of the Advisory Board of the OAS Center for Media Integrity.
Rosental Calmon Alves
Rosental Calmon Alves is a reference when it comes to innovation in journalism. Director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, he helped create and strengthen a new generation of independent journalistic organizations in Latin America. He worked for 27 years in Brazilian journalism, most of the time at Jornal do Brasil – where he created the country's first online news service and the first web edition of a newspaper. He serves on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Texas Tribune, the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism. In 2016, he was one of the winners of the Maria Moors Cabot award.
Maia Fortes
Maia Fortes is executive director of the Brazilian Association of Digital Journalism – Ajor, made up of more than 110 members. Graduated in Social Sciences from USP, she worked as a researcher in non-governmental organizations focused on public policies and human rights. For more than 10 years, he has worked in management positions focused on projects, products and operations in digital journalistic organizations. Before Ajor, he worked at Repórter Brasil and Nexo Jornal.
Natalia Passafaro
Natália Passafaro is Communication Coordinator at GIFE, and sits on the board of Rede Narrativas – an initiative that brings together professionals in the communication of causes. Communicator with more than 15 years of experience in content production and management, strategic planning and advocacy communication. Since 2012, he has worked in civil society organizations in the areas of education, culture and human rights. She is a journalist from Unesp, a specialist in Brazilian Studies from FESPSP, and a master's student in Cultural Studies from USP.
