“Positive Communication”: a successful experience in the field of communication in a Brazil impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic

Why isdeals Miranda and Harley Henriques

O Positive Background has always invested in Communication as a strategic axis in its institutional policy, understanding that this topic has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing or stabilizing the growth of the HIV/AIDS epidemic since the 90s in Brazil.

In 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fund, which works essentially with health, decided to create the project Positive Communication to Covid-19. The project expanded and democratized actions in the field of communication with the prospect of reducing the spread of the new coronavirus in socio-environmentally vulnerable territories. By raising awareness among community leaders about the importance of their actions in promoting and defending rights, reducing health inequalities and mapping problems that arose or worsened as a result of the pandemic, the project contributed to promoting the development of actions of political influence among public managers and society in general. Thus demonstrating the role of community communication in opposing fake news and science denialism.

A set of communication tools was produced: twenty podcasts, eighty informative cards and twenty lives that reached beyond the public benefiting from the actions of the Positive Background. The nineteen lives, which started in June 2020, reached an audience beyond the beneficiaries of the Positive Background. The lives that started in June 2020, took place in nineteen live broadcasts. The lives were highlighted in reaching people with communication about Covid-19. It appears that those with the best performance (reach, engagement and views) had relevant themes such as: vaccines against Covid-19, “new normal”: dialogues about the pandemic, sexuality, LGBTQI+ social vulnerabilities during the pandemic, denialism, the relationship between HIV and Covid-19, Fake News during the pandemic and what to expect in 2021.

From September onwards, a new phase began with the program Positive Communication Interview. There were six editions with experts who dealt with topics related to the current pandemic. Vaccines, the impact of the pandemic on the elderly and the impact of the pandemic on children were the topics of the best-performing interviews.

Twelve short podcasts and six long podcasts were produced. It is interesting to note that the two podcasts with the highest performance were about mental health live and the second was about Yellow September. This result demonstrated the importance of portraying these themes, especially during a pandemic.

During the period from June to December, seventy-two cards were produced on the most diverse topics related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The best-performing cards were about vaccines and Pink October.

It is clear that current topics, which are continually reported on, have a strong attractive power for the public. It is important to highlight that the lives continue to be viewed even after the live broadcast, which contributed to the increase in the number of views.

Furthermore, the team of experts who participated in the broadcasts ensured quality and scientific information. During this period, we had researchers from Fiocruz, USP, Hospital Emílio Ribas, CRT DST/Aids SP, among others.

The institutional image of the Positive Background has become increasingly stronger within Brazilian society, for being a reference institution in the process of democratizing access to qualified information on health, promotion and defense of human rights and for building a communication narrative, beyond the hegemonic media, with information quality and science-based. Thus, the Fund plays a role in communicating something so crucial to the dispute over narratives on the part of the progressive camp.
