Selma Moreira and Fernanda Lopes (Baob\u00e1 Fund); M\u00f4nica N\u00f3brega (Brazil Human Rights Fund); Renata Saavedra (Fundo Elas); Harley Nascimento (Positive Fund); Attilio Zonin (Casa Fund); Ivanderson Pinheiro (Instituto Baixada); Andreia Coutinho (Instituto Clima e Sociedade); Stefani Ceolla (ICOM); M\u00e9le Dornelas (ISPN); Simone Amorim (Tab\u00f4a); Andrea Blum (Redes da Mar\u00e9).<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"viewer-3ra1i\" class=\"qDGi6 Y9Dpf OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>Report 3: <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"qDGi6 Y9Dpf OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>The power and reach of narratives to explain and communicate community and social justice philanthropy <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"viewer-a5glb\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>\u201cBased on our experience, statistics and theses materialize into real, human stories.\u201d<\/em> The statement made by the communicators of the <strong>Baobab Fund <\/strong>about the lessons they have accumulated in communication to affirm community philanthropy and social justice, is capable of translating the main challenge of communication in the 21st century: overcoming the increasingly fierce competition for society&#039;s attention with stories that raise awareness and mobilize people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-741h8\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">To the <em>\u201creal and human stories\u201d<\/em>, cited by <strong>Baobab Fund<\/strong>, are also the main objective of <strong>Casa Fluminense<\/strong>. <em>\u201cThere is a challenge in communicating our projects: achieving communication that helps to materialize, but which also needs to be nourished by harvesting effects\u201d<\/em>, say the organization\u2019s communicators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-ftoe8\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The challenge posed by communications from member organizations of the <strong>Philanthropy and Social Justice Network (RFJS)<\/strong> it is to combine communication based on data, evidence and results with what drives the very reason for the existence of the organizations that make it up: solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-3909c\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>\u201cWe are looking closely at the aspect of recognition, appreciation and dissemination of collective actions for territorial development, with a view to creating more powerful narratives that can attract the attention of society and also engage large financiers, foundations and institutes that have central role also for the arrival of resources\u201d<\/em>, the communicators of the <strong>Casa Fluminense<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2hme1\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The power of narratives did not only appear in the interviews given by <strong>Casa Fluminense<\/strong> or the <strong>Baobab Fund<\/strong>, who mentioned the topic directly, but there was unanimous understanding of the <strong>Positive Background<\/strong>, of <strong>Elas Background<\/strong>, of <strong>ISPN<\/strong>, of <strong>Brazil Fund for Human Rights<\/strong>, of <strong>Baixada Institute<\/strong> It&#039;s from <strong>ICOM<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-ab6p\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">But what actually are narratives? In the Aur\u00e9lio dictionary, the definition is as follows: <em>\u201c<\/em><em>action, effect or process of narrating, reporting, exposing a fact, an event, a situation (real or imaginary), through words; narration&quot;<\/em>. If in the entry it is possible to define the meaning of the narratives, how do they materialize in the organizations of <strong>Philanthropy Network for Social Justice<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-6fptf\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">For the <strong>Positive Background<\/strong>, which supports people living with HIV, the power of narratives <em>\u201cis to ensure that, especially in our field, which gave significant results in reducing an epidemic in the country that was established in the 80s and which was decimating lives, stigmatizing people who were living with that illness, the social movement responds quickly and reverse an infection\u201d<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-v58b\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">According to the testimonies of the <strong>Elas Background<\/strong>, the importance of constructing human narratives, which translate impact into stories, is to recognize <em>\u201cwomen for their strengths \u2013 and not for their needs, as philanthropic institutions with a welfare nature do \u2013 as we are committed to transforming power relations in society\u201d<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-4hkcc\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>\u201cFunds that practice grantmaking carry out a complex activity. Anyone who donates resources to social projects, for example, has the expectation of donating directly to those who carry out the project\u201d<\/em>, reflect the communicators of the <strong>They<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-42u9r\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">O <strong>ISPN<\/strong>, in turn, points out that narratives to strengthen philanthropy for social justice must contain, in addition to the need to humanize the work carried out by the organization, explain <em>\u201cconcepts that are very present in the ISPN\u2019s way of acting and that have low dissemination and introjection among society, that few people know what they mean. In addition to guiding the construction of our narratives, these concepts need to be understood and assimilated in the way people and communities work to create a better, more just and sustainable world.\u201d<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-fot54\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>\u201cIn a highly connected environment, in which people are in contact with different topics at the same time, the challenge remains of how to communicate in an original way, which raises awareness and at the same time explains and is clear with the message.\u201d<\/em>, say the communicators of the <strong>ISPN<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2j7bc\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">As narratives start from the transformation of subjects into characters, from facts into plots, the issue of protagonism appeared prominently in the reflections of communicators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-80u6\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>&quot;O<\/em><em> Fundo Brasil understands grantmaking \u2013 and community philanthropy \u2013 as tools that bring to the center of the political debate a plurality of propositions about what the fundamental rights of citizenship are and how to promote and expand them. It illuminates local agendas and strategies, built on diverse knowledge and different understandings of the country and the world. It democratizes the construction of a more egalitarian country, empowering individuals, boosting community and collective development, strengthening voices so that they can lead their own causes.\u201d<\/em>, say FBDH professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-61d3o\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">More than seeing stories reflected in its communication content, Instituto Baixada highlights the importance of networking in the construction of narratives. <em>\u201c<\/em><em>In addition to the difficulties facing the fields of technology, we also find difficulties in mobilizing and interest on the part of the community itself, which we work on constantly through campaigns that help to broaden views on the importance of being connected in networks and, with this, expand discussions about philanthropy and donations\u201d<\/em>, they say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-e3l11\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The reflection on network partnerships emerged in the testimony of the <strong>ICOM<\/strong>. They defined the role of the organization as a \u201cbridge\u201d. \u201c<em>It is always necessary to communicate that ICOM&#039;s role is to be a bridge between donors and organizations that work &#039;on the cutting edge&#039;, promoting these causes, which has also proven to be quite challenging\u201d<\/em><em>,<\/em> they claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-64pqc\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><em>\u201cIt is challenging to communicate how community and social justice philanthropy happens in practice, and how the different work fronts that make this happen work \u2013 such as encouraging a culture of donation and private social investment\u201d<\/em>, emphasize the communicators of the <strong>ICOM<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-6n48j\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">For communicators <strong>Climate and Society Institute (iCS)<\/strong>, the narratives serve to give the real dimension of the impact of the topic in which the organization operates: \u201c<em>The challenge is <\/em><em>ensure that our messages reach vulnerable populations and are not restricted to a privileged field of climate actors. Talking about climate (and philanthropy) is talking about inequalities, race, gender and class.
