From the study launched by the ClimateWorks Foundation in 2021, a strong call to action in this regard has been consolidated in Europe and the United States: Only 2% of global philanthropy resources are directed to financing climate change mitigation projects.

The study has several known limitations. For example, it does not incorporate data on financing for climate change adaptation and uses data from fewer than 200 Foundations when the study from the Harvard Kennedy School indicates the existence of over 260,000 Foundations around the world. However, it has several merits and has been important in provoking reflections: Are we, as a sector, giving the necessary attention to this issue that is so transversal to everything we do? Would the reality of efforts to combat climate change simply change if the sector's contribution increased, for example, from 2% to 20%? If there is a legitimate desire from climate justice movements in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia to take the lead in decisions about the future of territories where climate impacts are occurring, how can philanthropy from these regions fit into this global debate if the vast majority of Climate philanthropy resources come from Europe and the United States?

Each question like this could generate a thousand interesting debates, but the point that I would like to address in this text and which, in a way, permeates all of these questions is: How is it possible for philanthropy to incorporate the climate agenda into its activities without having to become a climate financier in the strictest sense? The global movement #Filanthropy For Climate, launched in 2019, and which already has 555 signatory Foundations in 18 countries, seeks precisely to support non-climate philanthropy to take steps forward in this strategic look at climate change, but without losing its identity and its primary themes of action. In this support for philanthropy to go from intentions to actions, we start from at least three assumptions.

Firstly, getting involved with climate change may seem daunting at first and we need to make this first step more accessible. It is very common to hear from philanthropists who work in the field of democracy and social participation, for example, saying that they want to do something about climate change, but they don't know where to start. Many are not interested or do not see the point in looking at this issue from the perspective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but if this process took place from an intersectional perspective of race and gender, it could make sense. For these and these, how do you start? Our movement seeks to support this public in particular.

Second, we understand that the field of philanthropy is very heterogeneous and incorporating climate change into the philanthropic approach does not just mean having a line of financing for climate projects. There are foundations with Endowments that have preferred to develop their operations based on the systemic impact that their investments can have when demanding that their resource managers divest from fossil fuel companies. Other organizations seek to bring the climate issue into their operations, reducing the use of material resources in their programs, moving from print to digital publishing or even giving preference to local service providers, which reduces the carbon footprint of the entire operation.

Does this make them climate financiers? Not necessarily. Does it make a difference to how society deals with the climate emergency? For sure!

Third, every foundation, whether focused on local or global action, can benefit from exchanging experiences and collaborating with foundations in other parts of the world. Between deciding to deal with the climate emergency and achieving concrete results involves a lot of reflection, experimentation and the exercise of institutional self-knowledge. Collaboration and partnerships are fundamental on this journey. If we look at what a group of Community-Based Foundations in New Zealand has done to incorporate just transition into its actions and what Spanish Association of Foundations have been searching in this field, we will see that the local contexts are very different, but there are similar challenges, the exchange of which can help both in the search for paths that make sense for each territory.

Sometimes small course adjustments can lead to major systemic transformations. There is a lot to be done in Brazil and the world in this field and more Brazilian voices and experiences are needed in this space for global dialogue that is the movement #Filanthropy for Climate. We invite everyone to get involved in this movement, signing the international commitment to philanthropy for climate change, using the Implementation Guide to be inspired with ideas for concrete actions to implement, bringing your questions and sharing your experiences in this space that is under construction.

Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogues and the #PhilanthropyForClimate Lead at WINGS.
